As Kent State University approaches the 30th commemoration of May 4, 1970, the staffs of The Burr magazine and Kent State Student Media are covering May 4 with a historical and educational focus in a multimedia special edition for a national audience.

Formerly the Chestnut Burr yearbook, The Burr is an independent student magazine produced once per semester. This year, the staff is producing a third edition of The Burr while Kent State Student Media is preparing a companion CD-ROM exclusively for May 4. The content in this issue will explore May 4 as it affects Americans, not just at Kent State, but around the nation.

For three of the past five years, The Burr has won the Society of Professional Journalists National Mark of Excellence Award for Best All-Around Student Magazine. Our feature coverage of the 20th and 25th anniversaries of May 4 in 1990 also earned SPJ recognition. We strive to continue this quality with in-depth articles and features containing material and information never before published.

The CD-ROM is a comprehensive multimedia experience including 50 video clips from interviews with people connected to May 4, over 200 photos and a virtual reality tour of the events of May 4.

The Burr includes never-before-published interviews with the "Kent 25," the 25 Kent State students indicted after the shootings; a national guardsman who was there and the 9 students who were wounded in the gunfire. The Burr also contains a photo story containing pictures from the day of the shootings and an illustrated timeline of the tragedy.
